A Dark Song (Песнь дьявола, 2016) Review
A young brunette named Sofia moves to a remote area in an abandoned house that doesn't even have heating, but she is more than satisfied with this. Sofia wants to do something that ordinary people don't usually do, and she needs an experienced companion to help her. After some time, she finds him: Joseph, an unkempt and rude balding bearded man with glasses, who is also an alcoholic and a drug addict, reluctantly agrees to work with her. Could she have found someone else? Perhaps, but Sofia values experience and professional qualifications, and Joseph is a serious practicing occultist with quite extensive knowledge. The woman realizes that she needs a guide in the world of forbidden sciences, because she certainly cannot perform the ritual of summoning the spirit of her deceased son on her own...
It's a heavy film. And not really for everyone. Or rather, it's excellent in its category, if you know that there won't be any spectacular nonsense in it and that the focus will be on more subtle matters. A Dark Song is a challenging film. And it's important to understand that.
It's not a lighthearted “Exorcist of the Vatican” with a bunch of references to things everyone has already seen, a frowning Russell Crowe with yet another ridiculous accent, and a world built in the style of superhero movies (if anything, that was a compliment: I actually liked “The Exorcist”). The theme is similar, but the approach is completely different: A Dark Song is a slow-moving, long, painful story of two people torturing themselves and each other for the sake of an elusive and barely perceptible goal, the existence of which in the real world, rather than in the gloomy state of their minds, is generally questionable.
There are no impressive graphics, no clever twists, no large-scale locations. Just a house. Empty. And two people. With endless pain inside, which they try to drown out with forbidden practices, self-torture, and searching.
What are they looking for? Sofia herself is not ready to admit it. But she knows that she will endure anything for the sake of a fleeting hope. For the sake of what is hopelessly lost. For the sake of love.
Even if, in the end, her journey does not give her what she was looking for.
It is more important for her to understand herself and live through her pain, to push off from the bottom, to meet the darkness—and talk to it. So that in response she hears not what she wanted, but what she had long been afraid to admit... and with relief answer him, “I know.”
It's difficult to talk about this film without spoilers. It's a film of atmosphere, a film of mood. Dark shadows, knocking behind the wall, a barking dog in a place where there's not a soul for miles. Spreading patterns of Kabbalistic symbols. Longing. Despair. Horror. Silence... Healing.
A masterfully constructed auteur film-art. Not a horror movie, not a scare tactic, but a philosophical reflection and an immersive, painful experience.
Rating: From the perspective of a casual viewer who started watching “The Devil's Song” to confirm that it contains neither songs nor devils, 6.7/10. From the perspective of a viewer who watched the film to the end and attempted to immerse themselves in it, 7.8/10. It's heavy stuff, but artistic, beautiful, and profound, without giving all the answers directly. It might even be interesting to watch again (if you're in a masochistic mood).

Молодая брюнетка по имени София переезжает в далекую глушь в заброшенный дом, где нет даже отопления, - но ее это более чем устраивает. София хочет исполнить то, чего обычные люди, как правило, не делают, и ей для этого нужен опытный компаньон. Через какое-то время она его находит: с ней нехотя соглашается работать Джозеф, неопрятный и грубый лысеющий бородач в очках, к тому же алкоголик и наркоман. Могла бы она найти кого-то другого? Возможно, но Софии важен опыт и профиль работы, ведь Джозеф - вполне серьезный практикующий оккультист довольно широких познаний. Женщина понимает, что ей нужен проводник в мире запретных наук, ведь одна она с ритуалом вызова духа своего погибшего сына точно одна не справится…
Тяжелый фильм. И не совсем зрительский. Вернее, он отличный в своей категории, если четко знать, что никаких зрелищных глупостей в нем не будет и фокус будет на более тонких материях. “Песнь дьявола” - фильм-вызов. И это важно понимать.
Это не весёленький в своей сути “Экзорцист Ватикана” с кучей отсылок на то, что все уже видели, насупленным Расселом Кроу с еще одним нелепым акцентом и построением мира в стиле супергеройских фильмов (если что, это был комплимент: мне “Экзорцист” даже понравился). Тема похожая, но подход совершенно другой: “A Dark Song” - это тягучая, долгая, мучительная история двух людей, истязающих себя и друг друга ради призрачной и еле уловимой цели, существование которой в мире реальности, а не в сумрачном состоянии их разумов, вообще под вопросом.
Здесь нет ни впечатляющей графики, ни хитрых твистов, ни масштабных локаций. Только дом. Пустой. И два человека. С бесконечной болью внутри, которую они пытаются заглушить запретными практиками, самоистязанием и поиском .
Что они ищут? София сама не готова это признать. Но она знает, что вытерпит что угодно ради зыбкой надежды. Ради безнадежно утраченного. Ради любви.
Даже если в конце ее путь даст ей совсем не то, что она искала.
Ей важнее понять себя и прожить свою боль, оттолкнуться от самого дна, встретиться с тьмой - и поговорить с ней. Чтобы в ответ услышать не то, что она хотела, а то, что давно боялась признать … и с облегчением ответить ему “Я знаю”.
Сложно рассказывать об этом фильме без спойлеров. Это фильм-атмосфера, фильм-настроение. Мрачные тени, стук за стеной, лающий пес в месте, где на километры нет ни души. Разрастающиеся орнаменты каббалистических знаков. Тоска. Отчаяние. Ужас. Тишина… Исцеление.
Мастерски выстроенный авторский фильм-искусство. Не ужастик, не пугалка, - философское размышление и погружающий, болезненный опыт.
Оценка: с точки зрения простого зрителя, который начал смотреть “Песнь дьявола" чтобы убедиться, что в ней нет ни песни, ни дьявола, - 6.7/10. С точки зрения зрителя, который все-таки досмотрел фильм до конца и попытался проникнуться им, - 7.8/10. Тяжелая штука, но художественная, красивая и глубокая, не дающая всех ответов напрямую. Пересмотреть может быть даже интересно (под мазохистское настроение).
