As You Stood By (당신이 죽였다) Season 1 Review

Eun-su and Hae-su have been friends since school, even though adult life has driven them apart: one became a store manager, the other a children's writer. But when Eun-su starts noticing that Hae-su avoids her far too often, uses far too much makeup, and never appears in public wearing anything revealing, she realizes: she can no longer turn a blind eye to the obvious. So she offers an unexpected solution: a tyrant husband will not stop beating her.

Which means they will have to resort to murder.

The story has a wonderful balance between entertaining, heavy, and touching. There is enough of it to keep the series from descending into outright bleakness or soaring into moralizing heights (although, as we understand, it is impossible to do without some social commentary altogether). The screenwriters play brilliantly with the viewer's expectations and constantly subvert them: for example, a dangerous scene from one of the heroines' work routine turns out to be the beginning of an unusual acquaintance that will definitely play its part. The same goes for the other storylines: you can try to predict them, but it is more interesting simply to watch as everything keeps getting worse.

 

 

The main heroines are written and acted excellently. Eun-su (the excellent Jeon So-nee) initially seems detached and reserved; a professional with nerves of steel who has grown distant from her family and the world around her. Her friend Hae-su - (played to the absolute maximum by Lee Yoo-mi) always smiles, stays in the shadow of her successful husband, but is actually paralyzed by fear because of endless beatings, humiliation, and effectively rape. Her husband No Jin-byeol (another distinctive role from Jang Seung-jo) constantly takes advantage of this, an infantile manipulator with the traits of a genuine psychopath, completely devoid of empathy. You will simply hate him! And people like that are not fiction.

The desperate women will have to think through the perfect crime very carefully. But, as with Dostoevsky, what will matter more is not the crime itself, but what comes afterward. Yes, there will inevitably be the police, an investigation, and unpleasant conversations at the station, - but which characters will actually be at the center of events and what motives will drive them… that will make the second half of the story no less fascinating than the first.

 

 

The series is stylishly directed and does not resemble a classic tvN melodrama with Subway ads: luxurious panoramic views, long wide shots, off-center framing, and shot composition emphasize the heroines' isolation and loneliness right from the start. The music is beautiful and melodic, but works better in slow scenes than in action. The only downside - the episodes cut off at the most interesting moment (so that you, dear viewer, do not stretch out the pleasure, but watch the whole story in one night - you don't need sleep, right?)

To sum up, “As You Stood By” is an excellent thing that can be recommended to everyone. It doesn't matter whether you love dramas or, to you, they are just some Asian Squid Games with overacting beauties who all look almost alike, - this miniseries fully deserves attention, without compromise. Heavy, thoughtful, emotional. Balancing between the realism of a cruel life and the conventions of a staged show. It is so good that you could even rewatch it after some time. The thing is, that won't be easy: after all, it is about domestic violence, which is all too familiar to many.


 

Rating: 9/10, a little gem of international streaming. A powerful story about female friendship, strength, and mutual support, when the only solution to an unbearable problem turns out to be the worst one. The series does not justify its heroines, but treats them honestly: people backed into a corner are ready to make the hardest choice when no other options remain. Still asking, “Why do women kill”?
