The Mouse (마우스, Мышь) Review (2021)

...Just started watching. My impressions after the first episode are mixed: interesting story, excellent ending, but as an introductory story, it doesn't work at all. There is no proper introduction to the main character, no clearly defined genre, just a scary retro sketch that could easily be the third or fifth episode, but definitely not the first. 

I don't quite understand the idea, but we'll keep watching. Of course, the entry threshold is high.
     
(There's also some ridiculous censorship on Russian streaming service - blurred knives and corpses in the frame. It's unpleasant - are we a little schoolgirls or something? Fuck that. Don't do that, we're adults.
    

UPD: No, I was wrong - the series was broadcast in Korea exactly like that: blurred knives, retouched wounds and photos of victims printed already blurred (!). And now I no longer think it's bad: the subject matter is very heavy, the concentration of violence is high, and if you binge-watch it, it can be, let's say, a deforming experience.

The series itself, after 26 hours of viewing, is VERY twisted and at the same time down-to-earth. The creators play with the viewer's expectations so much that they build a puzzle that looks like it's about to fall apart, but in the end, it comes together into a fairly coherent picture. There is one major drawback to the narrative: the special episodes (two hours of content) look like extended recaps of events already shown, made with minimal effort. They can easily be skipped.

As for the story itself... it's interesting. In the 90s, ordinary Korean cops try to catch a wild maniac who cuts off people's heads. He is caught almost by accident and sentenced to death, but there is a moratorium on the death penalty. But twenty-five years later, the events repeat themselves, and a nervous policeman who hates his brother, a priest, tries to figure out the investigation together with a slow-witted rookie. The brutal and seemingly senseless murders with religious undertones escalate, and an extremely withdrawn sociopathic doctor falls under suspicion... Or is it not that simple?

A very cool plot. And the idea... Overall, it's like a Korean David Fincher, Crime and Punishment, a bit of Dexter, The X-Files, and a bit of medical science fiction. As I already mentioned, the entry threshold is a bit high, but the series is worth it. 

By the way, the final reveal in episode 15 is quite realistic. The Korean police were looking for the criminal, looking and looking, and in the end, the maniac turned out to be... I won't say who. He also lied to everyone around him, pretending to be nice. There's no soji here, everything went haywire, oppa...!

...Только начали смотреть. Впечатления после первой серии двойственные: интересная история, отличный финал, но как вводная история – вообще не работает. Ни нормального представления главного героя, ни четко заданного жанра, - просто пугающая ретро-зарисовка, которая вполне могла бы быть третьей или пятой, но никак не первой серией. 
    
Не совсем понял задумку, продолжим смотреть. Но порог вхождения, конечно, высокий.
     
(Еще на Кинопоиске смешная цензура - замыленные ножички и трупики в кадре. Неприятно, - я что, маленькая школьница?.. Пиздец. Не надо так, мы же взрослые люди.

    
UPD: Не, ошибся, - сериал в Корее транслировали именно так: размытые ножички, заретушированные раны и фотографии жертв, распечатанные уже размытыми (!). И сейчас я уже не считаю, что это плохо: тема очень тяжелая, концентрация жести высокая и если смотреть такое запоем, может быть, скажем так, деформирующим опытом.
    
Сам сериал, по итогу 26 часов просмотра, ОЧЕНЬ закрученный и при этом приземленный. Создатели настолько сильно играют ожиданиями зрителя, что выстраивают головоломку, которая того и гляди рассыплется, - но в конце собирается в довольно стройную картину. Сильный минус повествования один: спец-эпизоды (два часа контента) выглядят как расширенные рекапы уже показанных событий, сделанные с минимальным старанием. Их вполне можно пропустить.
    
На счет самой истории… она интересная. Простые корейские менты в 90-х пытаются поймать дикого маньяка, который режет людям головы. Его ловят почти случайно и приговаривают к смертной казни, на которую действует мораторий. Вот только двадцать пять лет спустя события повторяются и дёрганый полицейский, ненавидящий своего брата-священника, пытается разобраться в расследовании вместе с новичком-тугодумом; жесткие и на первый взгляд бессмысленные убийства с религиозным подтекстом разрастаются и в круг подозрений попадает крайне замкнутый врач-социопат… или все не так-то просто?
    
Очень крутая интрига. И задумка… в целом, это корейский Дэвид Финчер, “Преступление и наказание”, немного “Декстер”, “Секретные материалы” и немного медицинской фантастики. Порог вхождения, как я уже отметил, немного высоковат, но сериал стоит того. 

Кстати, финальная разгадка в 15-й серии, - она ведь вполне реалистичная. Искали корейские мусора преступника, искали, - а маньяком в итоге оказался... не буду говорить, кто. Еще и врал всем вокруг, притворяясь добреньким. Тут никакой соджи не хватит, все пошло наперекосяк, оппа…!
