A Minecraft Movie Review (2025)

A simple boy named Steve really wanted to dig mines. But there was nothing for children to do in the mines, so he gave up on it and over the years turned into a bearded man who one day remembered his dream and began to explore the underground world. There he found a strange cubic stone that opened the way to a whole new reality, created from cubes and operating according to its own slightly absurd laws. This world of creativity is threatened with capture and destruction by an evil witch who values gold above creativity, and Steve, with the help of his faithful square dog, hides the cubic Orb, which the sorceress needs, in the real world, where it falls into the hands of a team of misfits: an inept macho man, a teenage inventor, his overprotective sister, and a friendly real estate agent who loves animals. They also find themselves in the world of cubes and experience first-hand all the oddities of this bizarre world where nothing is as it seems. 

Oh. I laughed through almost half the film, but it really was AS bad as the critics said. The script isn't just lame, it's barely crawling. It's really just a collection of loosely connected scenes... a rough draft of a plot disguised as a script. There's fun, silliness, light absurdity, and chemistry between the characters (mostly thanks to the actors), but it's bad, just bad. Even for a children's film. Even for that.

But I still want to see the second part. 

What I liked... Jack Black is AWESOME. Yes, he more or less plays himself everywhere, but damn, he's so cool. Just a round, bearded little man who acts silly as he pleases and lives his best life. 
I also liked Jason Momoa overall. His character is a bit unpleasant and very comical at times, but he plays his role well as a big, masculine loser who doesn't have much brains but has a heart of sorts. 

The girls are cool. The inventor kid is okay. Although the script probably hurt him the most. Some of the conflict scenes looked super forced. There was no sense of danger, the antagonist doesn't really do anything... what else can I say.

Ah, Jennifer Coolidge is wonderful. But she's not in it enough, and her character has NO significance in the plot. Take her out and nothing would change. What a shame!

And that's how it is.

In short, I don't know how you can write films like this.
And that's why millions of children went crazy, throwing popcorn at the scene with ‘Chicken Jokey’?... Damn, I'm glad the film was a success, of course, but the audience was very lenient with it.

What does that say about us? Well... people like it when their tastes are respected and appreciated. When references are made to cult or rare things that only connoisseurs will notice. And when we differ from what is considered the norm or the masses, it's... well... in short, the bar isn't very high. Creepers, Endermen, zombies, a short day and night cycle, crafting basic items — all of this is shown on screen pretty much as it is, and you get recognition even if you've only spent an hour or so in Minecraft. So in that sense, the film is probably minimally successful. It's just a basic adaptation that respects the original, rather than an attempt to rework it, albeit creatively, like the peculiar ‘Super Mario Bros.’ from the 90s. 

But still, still... the IMBD rating is justified, it's exactly that —

P.S. Steve and Garrett's relationship is as bromantic as it can be for a family film without sliding into homoeroticism. Just two grown men flying through the air towards each other and hugging each other to squeeze through a hole from an explosion. 
It was really funny.

Please make a sequel and add some brains and soul to it, please. I beg you. I can't take another sequel of this magnitude of illogicality, predictability, and soullessness.

UPDATE: I watched Filmento's review. He believes that the film is, on the contrary, very well constructed and skilfully crafted for its purpose: to appeal to an audience of six-year-olds with a 10-second attention span, so that they don't get bored and watch the film about their favourite game to the end. That's why the plot races along like a train on rails, there's always something happening on screen, the humour is based on contrasts, the characters (almost all of them) are exaggerated and memorable (sorry, Emma Myers...), and the scenes in the film not only carry meaning, but also have some kind of optional entertainment element that makes them cooler, funnier or more unusual. Overall, this is Michael Bay's approach to cinema: he likes to create chaos and cool things that no one else does, like flying through the city on wingsuits from the third Transformers film. The film isn't great, but the scene is excellent. The same goes here — escaping from the piglins on wings, but the scene is complicated by the fact that Jack Black's character forgets himself and has to jump without a parachute after Jason Momoa to fly on his back like a dragon (dracarys!). 

So yes, I agree with that, Filmento is right. Perhaps I was too harsh on the film. After all, it really is for kids first and foremost. Even if it features the incredible Jennifer Coolidge and the brilliant Jack Black, who pronounces the names of game pieces with the fire and pathos of a speed-addled emcee.

But… the film really could have been deeper. Like “The LEGO Movie,” for example. Not repeating it, but still… the themes even intersect—both are stories about creativity and self-expression. “Minecraft” is just LEGO, only a game in voxels. Build whatever you want, invent your own activities, seek adventures, create your own world… The motivations of the villain and the main plot antagonist still seem a bit flat. Why does she want money so much, and why does she need it? Why is it so important to her to conquer the upper world (although it's understandable, they've exhausted all the resources in the lower world), why does she want to destroy creativity and self-expression, how does the upper world even function if its inhabitants don't exhaust its resources the same way the piglins do (just because the villagers are vegetarians and traders, and they don't exploit the subsoil the same way Steve does?)... so many unanswered questions.

Okay, let's face it, I'm 35, not 5. My brain already works differently, my soul demands different things.

It's still a small thing, but I did enjoy this film. I genuinely smiled widely and often while watching it.

By the way, it's beautifully shot, the graphics are superb. The artists had a difficult task – almost the entire film is on greenscreen/volume, sunlight and all that, plus the cubic style and non-cubic people... no, they drew everything beautifully, it was a mistake to criticize the trailers.

And also, it seemed to me that in many of the scenes with the piglins and those grumpy, long-nosed guards at the estate, real stuntmen played them. The wirework and stunts in many scenes were so natural. I wouldn't be surprised if they at least did some mocap after the fact. Cool, high-quality.

A decent kids' movie, in short.

P.P.S. I wish everyone could be like Jack Black. I wish I had that much energy, charisma, and self-confidence.

Простой мальчишка по имени Стив очень хотел копать шахты. Но детям в шахтах делать нечего, так что он забросил это дело и с годами превратился в бородатого мужчинку, который однажды все же вспомнил о своей мечте и начал исследовать подземный мир. В котором он нашел странный кубический камень, который открыл ему дорогу в совершенно новую реальность, созданную из кубиков и работающую по своим немного абсурдным законам. Этот мир творчества хочет захватить и уничтожить злая ведьма, которая ценит золото выше творчества, и Стив при помощи верного квадратного пса перепрятывает кубический Орб, который нужен колдунье, в реальном мире, где он попадает в руки команде неудачников: неумелому мачо, подростку-изобретателю, его переживающей сестре и приветливой риэлтерше, которая любит животных. Они тоже попадают в мир кубиков – и на своей шкуре переживают все странности причудливого мира, где все не то, как кажется. 

Ох. Я лыбился почти половину фильма, но это и правда было НАСТОЛЬКО плохо, насколько писали критики. Сценарий не просто хромает, он еле ползает. Это действительно набор слабо связанных сцен… черновик сюжета под видом сценария. В нем есть веселье, глупость, легкий абсурд и химия между героями (в основном, благодаря актерам), - но это плохо, просто плохо. Даже для детского фильма. Даже для него.

Но я все-таки хочу увидеть вторую часть. 

Что мне понравилось… Джек Блэк - АТОМНЫЙ. Да, он везде играет более-менее самого себя, но блин, какой же он прикольный. Просто круглый бородатый мужичок, который придуривается, как хочет, и живет свою лучшую жизнь. 
>Джейсон Момоа тоже в целом понравился. Его персонаж местами чуть неприятный и сильно комедийный, но он отыгрывает своего великовозрастного маскулинного неудачника, у которого не сильно много ума, но сердце какое-никакое есть, - хорошо. 


Девчонки прикольные. Парнишка-изобретатель - ну ок. Хотя сценарий его, наверное, больше всего пришиб. Некоторые сцены конфликтов выглядели супер-натужно. Ощущения опасности не было, антагонистка толком ничего не делает… что еще сказать.

А, Дженнифер Кулидж прекрасна. Но ее слишком мало, и ее персонаж в сюжете ВООБЩЕ не имеет значения. Убери ее - и ничего не изменится. А жаль!

И вот все так.

Короче, я не знаю, как так можно писать фильмы.
И вот по этому самому миллионы детей сходили с ума, бросались попкорном на сцене с “Chicken Jokey”?.. Блин, я рад за успех фильма, конечно, но тут зрители ну очень уж снисходительно обошлись с картиной.

Что это о нас говорит..? Ну… людям приятно, когда их вкусы уважают и ценят. Когда отсылаются к культовым или редким вещам, которые заметят только ценители. А когда мы чем-то отличаемся от того, что считается нормой или массой, это… ну… короче, планка не очень высока. Криперы, Эндермен, зомби, короткий цикл дня и ночи, крафтинг базовых вещей - все это показано на экране примерно так, как есть, и ты получаешь узнавание, даже если провел в майнкрафте от силы час. Так что в этом смысле фильм, наверное, минимально удался. Это просто базовая адаптация с уважением к оригиналу, а не попытка его переиначить, пусть и творчески, как своеобразный “Супер Братья Марио” из 90-х. 

Но все равно, все равно… рейтинг IMBD оправдан, это именно –

P.S. Отношения Стива и Гаррета - настолько бромансовые, насколько это вообще возможно для семейного фильма без скатывания в гомоэротизм. Просто два взрослых мужика летят друг на друге по воздуху и прижимаются друг к другу, чтобы протиснуться в отверстие от взрыва. 
Это было прям очень смешно.

Пожалуйста, сделайте вторую часть и добавьте ей мозгов и душу, пожалуйста. Очень прошу. Второй такой тупизны таких же масштабов нелогичности, предсказуемости и бездушия я не выдержу.

UPD.: Посмотрел обзор Filmento. Он считает, что фильм построен, наоборот, очень удачно и умело для своей цели: попасть в аудиторию шестилеток с окном внимания в 10 секунд, чтобы они не заскучали и досмотрели фильм по любимой игре до конца. Поэтому сюжет несется, как на рельсах, в кадре постоянно что-то происходит, юмор строится на контрастах, герои (почти все) гипертрофированные и запоминающиеся (прости, Эмма Майерс…), и сцены фильма не просто несут смысловую нагрузку, а еще и имеют какой-либо необязательный развлекательный элемент, который делает их круче, смешнее или необычнее. В общем и целом, это подход Майкла Бэя к кино: он любит делать хаос и крутые штуки, которые больше никто не делает, вроде пролета по городу на винг-сьютах из третьих “Трансформеров”. Фильм не очень, а вот сцена отличная. Так же и здесь - побег от пиглинов на крыльях, но сцена осложняется тем, что герой Джека Блека забывает о себе и ему приходится прыгать без парашюта вслед за Джейсоном Момоа, чтобы лететь у него на закорках как на драконе (дракарис!). 


Так что да, с этим можно согласиться, Filmento тут прав. Возможно, я был слишком строг к фильму. Все-таки он же и правда для детей в первую очередь. Пусть там и невероятная Дженнифер Кулидж, и гениальный Джек Блэк, декларирующий названия игровых предметов с огоньком и пафосом конферансье на спидах.

Но… все-таки фильм и правда мог быть и глубже. Как “LEGO: Фильм”, например. Не повторяя его, но все-таки… там же темы пересекаются даже - и там, и там истории о творчестве и самовыражении. “Майнкрафт” же то же LEGO, только игра и в вокселях. Строй, что хочешь, придумывай себе занятия, ищи приключения, создавай свой мир… Мотивация злодейки и главного сюжетного зла все еще кажется плосковатой. Почему она так хочет денег, зачем они ей? Почему ей важно завоевать верхний мир (хотя это понятно, они все ресурсы в нижнем мире исчерпали), почему она хочет уничтожить творчество и самовыражение, как вообще функционирует верхний мир, если его жители не исчерпывают его ресурсы так же, как пиглины (только потому что жители деревни - вегетарианцы и торговцы, и они не используют недра так же, как Стив?)… сколько вопросов без ответов. 

Ладно, признаем, мне 35, а не 5. У меня мозг уже по-другому работает, душа других вещей требует. 


Все-таки немного, но удовольствие я получил от этого фильма. Улыбался я действительно широко и часто, пока смотрел его. 

Кстати, снят он отлично, графика превосходная. Задача у художников была трудная - почти весь фильм на гринскрине/вольюме, солнечный свет и все такое, плюс еще кубический стиль и не кубические люди… не, отлично все нарисовали, зря ругали трейлеры. 


И еще, мне показалось, что во многих сценах пиглинов и этих, хмурых носатых охранников в поместье, сыграли настоящие каскадеры. Очень уж натуральный вайрворк и трюки во многих сценах. Не удивлюсь, если хотя бы мокапом пост-фактум делали. Круто, качественно.

Нормальный детский фильм, короче.
