Forgotten (기억의 밤, 2017) Review

Published on

New home, new life: an ordinary family celebrates a modest housewarming. The younger son, Jin-seok, is happy with his life and deeply respects his brother, but he can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong with the house. Why did the previous owner strictly forbid anyone from entering one of the rooms? Where does Yoo-seok keep disappearing to? And why does no one believe his suspicions?

Is someone really watching them?

Jin-seok is determined to find out what’s going on... But even he won’t be prepared for how terrifying the truth turns out to be.

"Night of Memories" — originally "Forgotten" — is an excellent paranoid thriller. It starts out like a supernatural horror film, then steadily builds suspense and delivers a twist that is nearly impossible to predict aside from a couple of subtle hints. An unexpected gem and a strong genre film well worth your time.

It’s a story about revenge, the search for truth, and the integrity of one’s own identity. A tangled puzzle that gradually forms a coherent picture. An inverted detective story where the suspects keep changing, and the ending is impossible to foresee. In "Night of Memories," the familiar world falls apart piece by piece; you can no longer trust even the people closest to you... or even yourself. What does it all mean? Why was such a dense web of lies woven?

Answering that without spoilers would be difficult — and unnecessary. This is exactly the kind of film you should know nothing about beforehand. It leads the protagonist, along with the viewer, through every stage of distrust, from gaslighting to neurosis; the final third turns everything upside down, and the ending emotionally devastates you (twice, in fact: don’t rush to turn the movie off immediately after the credits). It will hurt — but in a way you’ll accept as inevitable.

The film is very dark, slow-burning, and at times unsettling. The music is also chosen perfectly, creating an unusual blend of lyricism, fear, and sadness. It’s a somewhat unconventional mix that makes "Night of Memories" stand out among other thrillers. The film first sparks curiosity, then confusion, tension, and emotional heaviness. You’ll want to come up with your own theories ("ghosts? a curse? deception?"), but the story follows its own deadly logic. After all, this is Korea: fatalism and social commentary are frequent ingredients that make any story deeper.

Rating: 8/10, an excellent mystery thriller with a strong concept. Watching it again after knowing the ending may not be quite as interesting, but unfortunately that’s a common trait of the genre. If you enjoy dark detective stories and narratives that make you jump at every rustle in the dark, then this is your pick — a one-hundred-percent recommendation.
