Channel Zero. Candle Cove Review (2016)

A child psychologist and writer returns to his hometown 28 years after a mysterious mass murder that killed his twin brother. He is haunted by obsessive visions of a strange puppet television programme they watched as children, Candle Bay.

Except there was never any such programme, and the children were watching a blank screen.

The man tries to understand what it all was, how it is connected to his brother's death (disappearance?), and what the mysterious figure hiding in the dark forest and consisting of nothing but teeth is...

...Strange stuff. I tried to watch it once a long time ago, and it seemed incredibly dull. Six or seven years later, I tried again. It's a little easier to watch with age, but it's still incredibly muddled. It's slow-moving, static, filmed in the most television-like way possible (it seems like the cameraman was a kilometre away from the set and spent half the time scrolling through his phone instead of doing his job). Technically, it's almost unbearable to watch. In places, of course, it works, with its whole sluggish, heavy atmosphere of hopelessness in a small town that still hasn't recovered from the death of children in the late eighties, and some of the characters are really interesting - the sad British mother Fiona Shaw (the same nasty aunt from Harry Potter, the boss from Killing Eve and the conscientious mother of Andor from, well, "Star Wars: Andor", — she's a great actress, I love her), and the epileptic teacher who feeds SOMETHING in her backyard with stolen children's teeth and incites a gang of new victims on the Carousel TV channel (TV really does make you stupid!).

I've watched (with difficulty) four episodes out of six so far, and my favourite, the unimaginably beautiful wife of the dim-witted sheriff, who made unimaginably beautiful eyes at the gloomy and dull-witted main character, has already been killed by little shits in damn masks. Well, fuck it, I watched it for her sake! What beautiful eyebrows, lips, eyes she has. Natalie Brown, ladies and gentlemen, 52 years old in 2025. Why did you...

I don't know where this is going, but so far, the Steven King stuff is mediocre, of course. The idea behind the original creepypasta is cool, but only for a one-paragraph story with a twist at the end. That's it! Some kind of soul migration, some kind of ghosts, the fifth-tenth... come on, guys. It's almost unwatchable.

But I'll watch it to the end, of course. For Natalie Brown. And the toothy monster. Where did it come from, so sick... and what kind of shitty children's show with creepy dolls for alternatively developing spineless creatures? Please, at least explain it a little realistically. At least the origin of the broadcast, it's a pirate programme, like BE3NOGN, someone came up with it. It's interesting.

Ah. My first impression wasn't so wrong, of course.

I think I'll watch the first season and then drop it. Even if it's an anthology and the other stories might be better, guys, you have to start off on the right foot, not like this.

(Probably only Stephen King can write Stephen King stuff properly. However, it will be fun if the remaining two episodes change my opinion of the story.)

Updated: Okay, the ending is normal. It's logical. According to the plot, the creepy TV series turned out to be the creation of the subconscious of one of the brothers, Eddie, and the toothless monster turned out to be him too. And the whole thing with the nightmares and child murders thirty years later was concocted by the boy's still-living consciousness in order to bring back his twin brother and lure him into his little world to take over his body. And all these years, he was cared for by a fanatical teacher with epilepsy who had gone mad and who had actually killed her son for the miracles offered by the monster boy. And Mike/Eddie's mother ends up having to kill her son Mike to prevent Eddie's return to this world, which kind of rhymes with what the evil teacher did... In short, if you can get through the monstrously flat cinematography, the ambient-comatose soundtrack and the somewhat mediocre script, the ending is almost tolerable. I'm glad I watched this mess to the end — or rather, that it finally ended. But it's a really, really muddled mess, even despite the wonderful Fiona Shaw and that lovely sheriff's wife who was KILLED OFF for no reason two episodes before the finale ;(

3/10 (I wanted to give it 4/10, but screw it, series should be good not only in the last episode)

Детский психолог-писатель возвращается в родной город 28 лет спустя таинственного массового убийства, в котором погиб его брат-близнец. Его преследуют навязчивые видения странной кукольной телепередачи, которую они смотрели в детстве, - “Бухта Кэндл”. 

Вот только никакого шоу никогда не было и дети смотрели в пустой экран.

Мужчина пытается понять, что все это было, как связана смерть (исчезновение?) его брата, - и что за таинственная фигура, прячущаяся в темном лесу и состоящая из одних зубов…

…Странная штука. Я пытался смотреть ее один раз очень давно, показалось невероятной мутью. Лет шесть-семь спустя попробовал снова. С возрастом заходит немного легче, но это все еще невероятная муть. Тягучая, медленная (что неплохо!), статичная, снятая самым телевизонным образом из возможных (кажется, оператор был в километре от площадки и половину времени листал телефон вместо прямых обязанностей). Технически это почти невыносимо смотреть. Местами, конечно, работает, вся эта тягуче-тяжелая атмосфера безысходности маленького городка, который до сих пор не оправился от смерти детей в конце восьмидесятых, и персонажи некоторые прям интересные - грустная британская мама Фиона Шоу (это же вредная тетя из “Гарри Поттера”, начальница из “Убивая Еву” и совестливая мама Андора из, собственно “Андора”, - классная актриса, люблю ее), а еще поехавшая училка-эпилептичка, подкармливающая у себя на заднем дворе НЕЧТО украденными детскими зубами и науськивающая банду новых жертвц телеканала “Карусель” (от телека и правда глупеют!)

Досмотрел пока (с трудом) четыре серии из шести, а мою любимую невообразимо прекрасную жену мудаковатого шерифа, которая строила невообразимо прекрасные глазки мрачновато-туповатому главному герою, уже зарезали мелкие засранцы в проклятых масках. Ну нахер, я ради нее и смотрел! Какие у нее красивые брови, губы, глаза. Натали Браун, дамы и господа, 52 года в 2025-м году. Чего ж вы ее так…

Не знаю, к чему все выведет, но пока стивенкинговщина посредственная, конечно. Идея исходной крипипасты - крутая, но именно для истории в один абзац, с твистом в конце. Все! Какие-то переселения душ, какие-то призраки, пятое-десятое… ну вы чего, а. Это почти несмотрибельно.


Но я досмотрю, конечно. Ради Натали Браун. И зубастого монстра. Откуда он такой, болезный, вылез… и что за всратое детское шоу с криповыми куклами для альтернативно развивающихся спиногрызов? Пожалуйста, ну хоть немного реалистично объясните, а. Хотя бы происхождение трансляции, это же пиратская передача, как БЕ3НОГNМ, ее кто-то придумал. Это же интересно. 


Эх. Первое впечатление, конечно, было не таким уж и ошибочным.


Думаю, досмотрю первый сезон и дропну. Даже если это антология и другие истории могут быть лучше, - ребят, ну начинать нужно хотя бы нормально, а не вот так. 

(Наверное, только Стивен Кинг может нормально писать стивенкинговщину. Впрочем, будет забавно, если две оставшиеся серии изменят мое мнение об истории.)

Обновлено: Ладно, концовочка нормальная. В логике событий. По сюжету, криповый телесериал оказался творением подсознания одного из братьев, Эдди, и зуботелый монстр - тоже оказался он. И всю эту штуку с кошмарами и убийствами детьми тридцать лет спустя все еще живое сознание мальчика заварило, чтобы вернуть брата-близнеца и заманить его в свой маленький мир, чтобы захватить его тело. И все эти годы за ним ухаживала поехавшая училка-фанатичка с эпилепсией, которая фактически убила своего сына ради чудес, предложенных мальчиком-монстром. И матери Майка/Эдди в конце приходится убить своего сына Майка, чтобы помешать возвращению Эдди в этот мир, что как бы неплохо рифмуется с тем, что сделала злобная училка…. короче, в финале, если пережить чудовищно плоскую операторскую работу, амбиентно-коматозный саундтрек и немного так себе сценарий, - ну, заканчивается почти терпимо. Я рад, что досмотрел эту муть до конца, - вернее, что она наконец закончилась. Но это прям совсем-совсем мутная шляпа, даже не смотря на прекрасную Фиону Шоу и ту прекрасную жену шерифа, которую ЗАРЕЗАЛИ НАФИГ за две серии до финала ;( 


3/10 (хотел поставить 4/10, но черт с ним, сериалы должны быть хорошими не только в последней серии)
