Yu Ena is a young female profiler whose job is to try to understand the motives of criminals through observation and reading emotions. But she doesn't work in the department for no reason: ten years ago, her uncle, a former police lieutenant, died right before her eyes, and Ena is still not sure if she killed him because of her memory lapses. A new murder occurs, and a piece of the puzzle is found at the scene. The girl immerses herself in the case despite the dissatisfaction of her partner, investigator Kim Han-seom, who is too good at his job and is not sure that this strange woman can be trusted at all. Especially since she claims that this is the beginning of a series of murders and there will be even more victims if they don't solve this puzzle.

Nine Puzzles is a series that leaves viewers as stumped as investigators are when a long-closed cold case reappears on their desks ten years after it was closed. Why? I'll explain.

It's a good series with an interesting concept, cool characters, a paranoid atmosphere, and unexpected twists. But it is spoiled by its uneven pace (in places, Nine Puzzles is very slow, and a couple of episodes seem like philosophical fillers), problems with the logic of the action (and this is due to the point of view shown on the events, and not the events themselves: in the other two episodes, you will ask yourself, “What the hell is going on?” ), the development of the detective storyline itself, where the characters often tread water and test hypotheses - like real detectives (the setting of the series, despite the exciting premise, is quite mundane) - and the ending may disappoint you a little. The preamble to the series, along with the stylishly surreal credits, promises a large-scale game of cat and mouse between Sherlock Holmes and the Constructor from Saw, but in reality... the genre turns out to be a deception, and the story of the serial murders is not at all what it seems at the beginning: there is no cunning mastermind, no sophisticated plan. Everything is much deeper... and more tragic.

And that's not so bad, if you're prepared for it.

In any case, you're unlikely to figure out the killer right away. But you'll suspect everyone!

Nine Puzzles is a down-to-earth procedural with a very unusual main character. Yu Ena is a sweet, fearless girl with mild autism who loves to say things out of context, look straight into your soul with her perpetually sleepy squirrel eyes, and then make the most brilliant deductions possible. She is the main attraction of the story. At first, her character causes some bewilderment (which is understandable, because it's hard to sympathize with a potential murderer!), but then, somewhere around the second or third episode, she reveals herself as a professional, and you become completely and unconditionally attached to her. The high ratings of this drama on review aggregators are mainly due to the heroine Kim Da-mi.

Her on-screen partner is also quite good. He is a rare example of a completely good cop: a stubborn, persistent detective who strictly follows all the logical rules of his complex work and is ready to suspect anyone of murder until their alibi is proven beyond a doubt. Kim Hee-sun, played by Song Seok-ku, is cool, very cool. His duo with Kim Da-mi creates a classic police buddy movie, with almost no hint of romance. Pure professionalism creates the emotional core of the picture.

The music in the series is quite beautiful and appropriate, with many orchestral motifs and even a little jazz. It's an unusual choice of soundtrack, but it works for the story and its style.

Speaking of style, Nine Puzzles looks like an auteur work, even in its choice of colors. Purple-crimson plays a very important role in the story: it is the color of Yu In-na's car, Kim Hee-sun's sweater, the needle in the neck of the murdered man, a suitcase in the depths of the lake... a deliberately striking shade of blood against the backdrop of restrained, sometimes almost monochrome or sepia-toned color correction. Artistically flawless.

The series is shot quite well, although in places it has a noticeable television feel. But this does not cause any rejection: the simple camera work is perfectly suited to the monotonous investigative work: interrogations, confessions, working with evidence, trips, interrogations, confessions... and the gloomy chambers of Yu Ena's mind, whose imagination is so vivid that she literally puts herself in the shoes of violent killers to understand their logic. An interesting approach!

To sum up, this is a good choice for a few evenings if you like David Fincher's films and the first season of True Detective with McConaughey and Harrelson, are energetic enough to withstand some sluggishness, appreciate interesting female characters (this should be at the top of the list, because Ena is simply gorgeous at second or third glance), are willing to be a little deceived by the genre formula of the series, and also love to solve puzzles along with the characters. Because where there is one piece of the puzzle, there is the next... and the next... and the next.

And who knows where the maniac will stop. (If it is a maniac)

Rating: 7.7/10, the investigation is led by a neuro-exceptional coffee-loving cutie and a supercop who never takes off his super hat. Ten out of ten zodiac signs (and no “What's in the box?!”).

Происходит новое убийство, на месте которого находят кусочек пазла, и девушка целиком погружается это дело несмотря на недовольство своего напарника, следователя Кима Хан Сема, который слишком хорошо делает свою работу и не уверен, что странноватой особе вообще можно доверять. Тем более что она утверждает, что это - начало цепочки серийных убийств и жертв будет еще больше, если они не решат эту головоломку.

”Девять пазлов” - сериал, который ставит своего зрителя в тупик так же, как следователя - давно закрытый “висяк”, когда тот снова появляется у него на доске спустя десять лет после закрытия дела. Почему? Сейчас объясню.

Это неплохой сериал с интересной концепцией, классными персонажами, параноидальной атмосферой и неожиданными твистами. Но его портят не всегда ровный темп (местами “Девять пазлов” ну очень тягучи, а пара эпизодов вообще выглядят философскими филлерами), проблемы с логикой действия (и это связано с показанной точкой зрения на события, а не с самими событиями: в других двух эпизодах вы будете спрашивать себя “Какого черта вообще происходит?”), само развитие детективной линии, где герои довольно часто топчутся на месте и тестируют гипотезы, - впрочем, как настоящие детективы (сеттинг у сериала, несмотря на будоражащую завязку, вполне приземленный), - а еще финал вас может немного разочаровать. Преамбула сериала вместе со стильно-сюрреалистичными титрами обещает масштабную игру в кошки-мышки фигур Шерлока Холмса против Конструктора из “Пилы”, а на деле… жанр оказывается обманкой, а сама история серийных убийств - совсем не тем, чем кажется в самом начале: никакого коварного мастер-майнда, никакого изощренного замысла. Все гораздо глубже… и трагичнее.

И это не так плохо, если быть к этому готовым.
Во всяком случае, убийцу вы вряд ли вычислите сразу. Но подозревать будете всех!

”Девять пазлов” - приземленный процедуриал с очень нестандартной главной героиней. Ю И На - совершенно ничего не боящаяся сладкая булочка легкой формы аутизма, обожающая говорить что-то невпопад, смотреть прямо в душу своими вечно сонными беличьими глазами, а затем - делать самые гениальные умозаключения из возможных. Она - главное украшение истории. Ее героиня сначала вызывает некоторую оторопь (еще бы, ведь сложно сочувствовать потенциальной убийце!), но потом, где-то со второй или третьей серии она раскрывается как профессионал и к ней привязываешься полностью и безоговорочно. Высокие рейтинги этой дорамы на агрегаторах оценок - преимущественно заслуга героини Ким Да Ми.

Ее экранный напарник тоже неплох. Редкий пример стопроцентно хорошего копа: упёртого, настойчивого детектива, который четко следует всем логическим правилам своей сложной работы и готов подозревать в убийстве кого угодно, пока алиби не доказано стопроцентно. Ким Хе Син в исполнении Сон Сок Ку - крут, очень крут. Его дуэт с Ким Да Ми создает классический полицейский бадди-муви, причем почти без налета романтики. Чистый профессионализм, создающий эмоциональное ядро картины.

Музыка в сериале довольно красивая и уместная, в ней много оркестровых мотивов, есть даже немного джаза. Необычный выбор звукового сопровождения, работающий на историю и ее стиль.

Кстати, о стиле - “Девять пазлов” выглядит как авторское произведение даже на уровне выбора цвета. В истории очень большую роль играет пурпурно-малиновый: это цвет машины Ю И Ны, свитера Ким Хе Сина, ручки шила в шее убитого, одного чемоданчика в глубинах озера… намеренно выделяющийся оттенок крови на фоне сдержанной, местами почти монохромной или уходящей в сепию, цветокоррекции. Художественно безупречно.

Снят сериал вполне достойно, хоть местами и заметно по-телевизионному. Но отторжения это не вызывает: простая операторская работа отлично подходит монотонной следовательской работе: допросы, признания, работа с уликами, выезды, допросы, признания… и сумрачные чертоги разума Ю И Ны, у которой настолько живое воображение, что она буквально ставит себя на место жестоких убийц, чтобы понять их логику. Интересный подход!

Если подытожить, то это хороший выбор на несколько вечеров, если вы любите фильмы Дэвида Финчера и первый сезон “Настоящего детектива” с Макконахи и Харрельсеном, достаточно бодры, чтобы выдержать некоторую тягучесть, цените интересных женских персонажей (это должно быть на первом месте, потому что И На - на второй или третий взгляд просто шикарная), готовы быть немного обманутыми жанровой формулой сериала, а еще - любите разгадывать пазлы вместе с героями. Потому что где один кусочек головоломки, там и следующий… и еще… и еще.

И кто знает, где маньяк остановится. (Если это маньяк)

Оценка: 7.7/10, следствие вели нейроотличная няша-ебаняша и и суперкоп, никогда не снимающий свою супер-шапку. Десять зодиаков из десяти (и никаких “Что там в коробке?!”).
