Quiet provincial Hawkins, 1987. Since the previous mysterious events, the city has been quarantined, the military is in charge, and the townspeople are trying to live their normal lives. A group of high school teenagers who have barely survived a series of encounters with the paranormal are trying not to attract attention, because one of them, a reclusive girl named Eleven, is being sought by the authorities, led by the cruel Dr. Kay.

Long ago, the girl was the only survivor of cruel and not entirely legal experiments to develop extrasensory abilities, and for some reason, at the same time as her rebellion, monsters flooded into the laboratory. Eleven blamed herself for what happened for many years, but now she has learned the whole truth about the Upside Down and her connection to it, and now, together with her new friends, she is trying to track down a powerful and dangerous creature that threatens the whole world: Vecna, a monstrous psychopath and master of minds, lurking in a parallel world and clearly plotting something...

This is how the fifth season of the iconic fantasy series Stranger Things begins. It has never been too serious or particularly original. It was a nostalgic stylization of adventure films with a touch of mysticism, where the plot centered on a group of teenagers alone facing the horrors created by a cruel adult world.

And now this story is coming to an end. Concluding a true era. And how exactly is it ending...

Not perfectly, not always dramatically smooth, but sincerely, deeply, with a sense of real farewell to the characters who grew up (and matured) before our eyes.

It was wonderful.

Even though the fifth season is more of an eight-episode epilogue to the fourth, and it's important to understand that before watching it. (As well as the fact that not all questions will be answered, and that's okay.)

It's long, sweeping, with a lot of exposition and new secondary characters that can be annoying at first. But in the end, everything comes together into a perfectly logical narrative and a grand, truly final adventure with a bunch of plot twists, marking the end of childhood.

All the significant characters will see their arcs develop and come to a conclusion — even the villain will turn out to be a little deeper and have his own pain.

Is this season worth watching? If you love this series for its impeccable stylization of how Steven Spielberg might film Stephen King, strange hairstyles, angular cars, synthesizer music, naive characters, and a constant sense of mystery and danger, then yes, definitely. If, like me, you enjoyed the cheerful third season and the amazingly dark, all-revealing fourth, then you will definitely enjoy the fifth. But be prepared for the journey not to be an easy one. Those who watched the episodes as they were released experienced this firsthand.

It seems that Netflix had good reason to divide the season into three parts and release the first four episodes first. They form a perfect narrative with new circumstances, matured characters, changed relationships, raised stakes, and new secrets that turn everything we knew before upside down. The team of Will (the boy who was the first to get lost in the Upside Down), Mike (his loyal friend), and Ellie constantly improvises, uses creative solutions, and tries to think two steps ahead to outsmart Vecna and the US military, who, if you think about it, are scarier than the Demogorgon monsters. (This point is not strongly emphasized in the plot, but Stranger Things has a clear anti-militarist message. The real monsters and the cause of others' suffering are people, not the beasts born of the mind's dreams.)

But the four episodes end, and in the fifth... the exposition begins again. The heroes' plan has failed, everything has turned out differently, the team is divided, and we are at an impasse. It's time for reflection and analysis of mistakes. Here, the pace of the series slows down noticeably and drags on until the end of the sixth episode, in which the logic of some characters' actions begins to raise serious questions, and the last scene even copies one of the strongest moments of the fourth season (yes, I'm talking about that very run-escape to Kate Bush's “Running Up That Hill”). In my opinion, the worst episode of the season is not the seventh, which insulted homophobes out of nowhere (people really are different, guys, and this character is simply the heart of the series; his evolution from a victim of monstrous emotional and physical abuse to a person who has accepted himself and his strength is delightful), but the sixth.

Rewatch this moment with Max's escape again; it is excellent.

But the last two episodes, seven and eight, even things out. We learn about the true (this time for sure) nature of the Upside Down, about the world on the other side, and the heroes, like in their favorite board games, gather their gear and head into the final decisive battle with a monster that exceeds all expectations. (This part may be a little disappointing if you're expecting Eleven to spend the entire finale beating Vekna with one fatality after another, but Stranger Things has always been about a group of friends fighting for each other, not just about a quiet telepath who can lift a truck with the power of her mind.) The first hour of the eighth episode is a long, sweeping, and well-deserved culmination of the entire story, putting a definitive end to it. And the second half... is literally the second third of The Return of the King, a long, thoughtful, and touching farewell to the characters. What in another new fantasy film classic, The Lord of the Rings, fits into three minutes of optional epilogue, here unfolds slowly over an hour. And that is exactly what the finale of the story and its viewers need.

The window is broken. The past is behind us. Not all heroes made it to the end. And will it be a happy ending? “We didn't have a childhood, there were many terrible things around us... but there were also good things. Many good things. We had each other.”

The children grew up and became adults.

There are so many opportunities and paths ahead... but behind them will always be the old, cozy Hawkins, which has seen too many terrible things.

Rating: 8.1/10. A brilliant conclusion to a decade-long story. Not without flaws, with some annoying new characters and, in my opinion, Millie Bobby Brown's not always strong performance as Eleven (her constantly frowning and sullen face in almost every scene has already become a meme), but brilliant nonetheless. We will definitely miss these eighties. And we look forward to the Duffer brothers' new projects.

Goodbye, Will. Goodbye, Ellie. Goodbye, Max, who has returned, Lucas, who has waited for her, loyal Mike, sharp-witted Dustin, feisty Nancy, desperate Jonathan, and everyone else. And long live Hellfire Club, the coolest rock club in the world!

Оди много лет винила в произошедшем себя, но теперь узнала всю правда об Изнанке и своей связи с ней, и теперь вместе со своими новыми друзьями пытается выследить могущественное и опасное существо, угрожающее всему миру: Векна, монструозный психопат и повелитель разума, затаился в параллельном мире и явно что-то замышляет…

Именно так начинается пятый сезон знакового фантастического сериала “Очень странных дел”. Он никогда не был ни слишком серьезным, ни совсем уж оригинальным. Ностальгическая стилизация под приключенческие фильмы с ноткой мистики, где в центре сюжета была группа подростков, в одиночку противостоящим ужасам, созданными миром жестоких взрослых.

И эта история подходит к концу. Завершая настоящую эпоху. И как именно ее завершая…

Не идеально, не всегда ровно драматургически, - но искренне, глубоко, с чувством настоящего прощания с героями, которые росли (и взрослели) у нас на глазах.

Это было прекрасно.

Даже несмотря на то, что пятый сезон - скорее растянутый на восемь серий эпилог четвертого, и это важно понимать перед его просмотром. (Как и то, что не абсолютно все вопросы будут отвечены, - и это нормально.)

Он длинный, размашистый, в нем много экспозиции и новых второстепенных персонажей, которые могут поначалу бесить. Но в конце все выстраивается во вполне логичный нарратив и большое, по-настоящему последнее приключение с кучей сюжетных поворотов, знаменующее конец детства.

Все значимые герои получат свое развитие и завершение арок, - даже злодей окажется чуть глубже и со своей болью.

Стоит ли смотреть этот сезон? Если вы любите этот сериал хотя бы за безупречную стилизацию под то, как Стивен Спилберг мог бы снять Стивена Кинга, странные прически, угловатые машины, синтезаторную музыку, наивных героев и постоянное чувство тайны и опасности, - тогда да, безусловно. Если вам, как и мне, понравился веселый третий сезон и изумительно-мрачный, все проясняющий четвертый, то вам определенно понравится пятый. Но будьте готовы к тому, что путешествие не будет легким. И это на своей шкуре прочувствовали те, кто смотрел серии по мере выхода.

Кажется, Netflix неспроста поделил сезон на три части и сначала опубликовал первые четыре серии. Они выстраиваются в идеальное повествование с новыми условиями, повзрослевшими героями, изменившимися отношениями, поднявшимися ставками и очередными тайнами, переворачивающими все, что мы знали до этого. Команда Уилла (мальчик, первым потерявшийся в Изнанке), Майка (его верный друг) и Оди постоянно импровизирует, использует творческие решения и пытается думать на два шага вперед, чтобы перехитрить Векну и американских военных, которые, если подумать, пострашнее монстров-демогоргонов будут. (Этот момент не сильно подсвечивается в сюжете, но “Очень странные дела” носят явный антимилитаристский посыл. Настоящие монстры и причина страданий других - люди, а не чудовища, которых рождает сон разума.)

Но четыре эпизода заканчиваются и в пятом… снова начинается экспозиция. План героев сорвался, все оказалось не так, команда разобщена, мы в тупике. Время рефлексии и разбора ошибок. Тут темп сериала заметно спадает и провисает до конца шестого эпизода, в котором логика действий некоторых персонажей начинает вызывать серьезные вопросы, а последняя сцена вообще копирует один из самых сильных моментов четвертого сезона (да, я о том самом беге-спасении под “Running Up That Hill” Кейт Буш). Как по мне, худшая серия сезона - не седьмая, которая на пустом месте оскорбила гомофобов (люди и правда разные бывают, ребята, а этот герой - просто сердце сериала, его эволюция из жертвы чудовищного эмоционального и физического насилия в человека, принявшего себя и свою силу, восхитительна), а шестая.

Пересмотрите этот момент с побегом Макс еще раз, он прекрасен.

Но последние две серии, седьмая и восьмая, выравнивают впечатление. Мы узнаем о настоящей (на этот раз точно) природе Изнанки, о мире на другой стороне, герои, как в их любимых настольных играх, соберут обмундирование и отправятся в последний решающий бой с превосходящим любые ожидания монстром. (Эта часть может немного разочаровать, если вы ждете, что в финале Одиннадцать полчаса только будет лупить Векну одним фаталити за другим, – но “Очень странные дела” всегда были о группе друзей, борющихся друг за друга вместе, не только о тихой телепатке, способной силой мысли поднять грузовик.) Первый час восьмой серии - это длинная, размашистая и заслуженная кульминация всей истории, ставящая в ней законченную точку. А вторая половина… это буквально вторая треть “Возвращения короля”, долгое, вдумчивое и трогательное прощание с героями. То, что в другой новой классике кино-фэнтези, “Дарах Смерти”, уместилось в три минуты необязательного эпилога, тут неспешно развивается час. И это – именно то, что нужно финалу истории и его зрителям.

Векна повержен. Изнанка осталась в прошлом. Не все герои дошли до финала. И будет ли он счастливым? “У нас не было детства, было много ужасного рядом… но было и хорошее. Много хорошего. Мы были у нас.”

Дети выросли, стали взрослыми.
Впереди столько возможностей и дорог… но позади всегда будет старый, уютный и повидавший слишком много ужасного Хокинс.

Оценка: 8.1/10. Блестящее завершение десятилетней истории. Не без недостатков, с местами бесячими новыми героями и, на мой взгляд, не всегда сильной актерской игрой Милли Бобби Браун в роли Одиннадцать (ее постоянно насупленно-скукоженное лицо почти в каждой сцене героини уже разошлось на мемы), - но все равно блестящее. По этим восьмидесятым мы точно будем скучать. А новые проекты братьев Дафферов – ждать с нетерпением.

Прощай Уилл. Прощай, Оди. Прощайте, вернувшаяся Макс, дождавшийся ее Лукас, верный Майк, въедливый Дастин, боевитая Нэнси, отчаянный Джонатан и все остальные. И да здраствует “Клуб Адского Пламени”, самый крутой рок-клуб на свете! 🤘🤘 Эдди Мэйсон с нами!
