How To Make A Furniture Catalog Alone: Then & Now

(LLC “Empire”, Russia)

Per Aspera Ad Astra

Regular customers asked to update the catalog that we have been keeping for many years: some of the information is already outdated, new models have appeared. It was not the best time to take an additional order, but I could not refuse (and in the end I have no regrets).

In this project, the customer himself provided the exact furniture models and input data, but I did a 3D visualization of the pictures in two views (in a fictional interior and separately, on a white background; in addition, there were also schematic views with dimensions so that the reader of the catalog could understand that are the models behind the facades), as well as the design and layout of the catalog itself for 60+ pages. Some of the renders were done in a bundle of 3ds Max + Corona, and some (for speed and for the sake of interest) – in Lumion, which works on different principles of rendering.

Someday in the past it all looked like this:

(Same time)

Now it looks something like this, to say the least:

Photo Reference Modelling + Realistic Visual

(“Mebel Profi”, Russia)

How It Was Made

In this case, the task was to draw 3D models of children’s furniture from photographs and fit them into a fictional interior, and to build the process so that in the future it would be possible to quickly and inexpensively make variations of models of any colors and prints. The starting point were photographs and overall dimensions, according to which I built the models and basic interiors around them, added stock objects from 3dSky (there is an excellent tariff plan for models that have not been moderated in the paid section), rendered in a bundle 3ds Max + Corona without forgetting the CMasking_ID layer, so that later in Photoshop you can quickly select the desired part of the furniture and repaint it. On this project, I tried the TurboRender render farm (You can register here and use promo code SFZjVU0rMkliZ0o0Y0FZbm1zaTltZz09 to get +50% for your first purchase!) for the first time: what took an hour and a half of real time on my computer, three TurboRender nodes made it in seven minutes. Great experience, in every sense.

The upholstery of the sofa was modeled in 3ds Max and finalized in Sculptris where I manually sculpted the folds of the fabric.

One model – many variations that can be done very quickly.

In addition to these renders, an IKEA-style assembly diagram of the finished product was created with the help of other team members.

Coat of arms of Tatarstan made of wood (STL model for 3D milling)

(Advertising Group “Abris” (Kazan, Russia)

Here it was required to model the coat of arms of the Republic of Tatarstan so that it could be cut on a machine. To do this, I modeled the base of the model in 3ds Max, increased the resolution of the base mesh and added a skin relief to the shield (while making the edges of the shield carved); the winged leopard itself was modified in Sculptris, where I sculpted the muscles, the volume of the fur where it was appropriate on the bas-relief, and other details. After turning on the machine using the STL file, it turned out quite well.

A little secret of a living visa – chromatic aberration: a thin rainbow border (a duplicate layer in Photoshop with a semitransparent overlay and two channels of three, with a shift of one pixel) makes the picture more convincing.

New Sberbank Offices Visualizations

(Volzhsk, Russia)

…So sad it wasn’t actually realized

This visual was interesting to make – not so long ago it was raining, and the reflection of the façade and signs that did not exist in reality should also be added to the puddles.

The design had to be changed a little before production.

The images of the dolls were taken from the official website and enlarged using the Waifu2X online neural network, trained on thousands of vector drawings.
